Sunnylands resumes its outdoor movie series with a trio of back-to-school films from the 1980s
RANCHO MIRAGE, CA – Reopening Sept. 13 after a summer hiatus, Sunnylands Center & Gardens’ first week of the new season features the return of Films in the Gardens showing a trio of back-to-school classics from the 1980s.
Screened on three consecutive Fridays in September, the movies are:
• Sept. 15 at 7:30 pm—Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)—When Keith goes out with Amanda, the girl of his dreams, Amanda’s ex-boyfriend plans to get back at Keith. Meanwhile, Keith’s best friend, tomboy Watts, realizes she has feelings for Keith (IMDb). Rated: PG-13. Run time: 1 hour 35 minutes.
• Sept. 22 at 7:30 pm—Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)—A popular high school student decides to take a day off from school, going to extreme lengths to pull it off, much to the chagrin of his principal who will do anything to stop him (IMDb). Rated: PG-13. Run time: 1 hour 43 minutes.
• Sept. 29 at 7:30 pm—The Breakfast Club (1985)—Five high school students meet in Saturday detention and discover how they have a great deal more in common than they thought (IMDb). Rated: R. Run time: 1 hour 37 minutes.
All films begin at 7:30 p.m., with Sunnylands’ gates opening at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
While reservations are not required, carpooling is strongly encouraged. No food or seating is provided. Filmgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and small picnics. Large coolers, alcohol, smoking, and pets are not permitted.
Films may be canceled at any time due to weather conditions, including rain, lightning, or strong winds.
Films in the Gardens is presented in partnership with the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Sunnylands Center & Gardens is located at 37977 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage.
Beginning Sept. 13, Sunnylands Center & Gardens is open Wednesday through Sunday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Parking and admission to the Center & Gardens are free of charge.
