RANCHO MIRAGE, CA — Sunnylands is inviting the public to explore desert ecosystems at its annual “Family Day: In the Gardens,” a fun-filled day focused on the plants and wildlife of the Coachella Valley.
The event at Sunnylands Center & Gardens is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 21. Admission and parking are free. Guests will have the opportunity to take part in several activities highlighting desert plants and wildlife, including:
Guided bird walks with knowledgeable birders at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. The one-hour
walks introduce guests to the many local and migratory bird species in the
Sunnylands gardens.
Local designer Leslie Kelly Shockley, owner of Tea With Iris, will have a native plant printing
activity. Participants will be able to make their own plant print using the native plants that are
grown in the Tea With Iris garden, on a hand-made organic cotton coaster.
The S.C.R.A.P. Gallery will provide a mix of materials to create your own Earth Day-inspired
textile collage with colorful repurposed fabric samples, paper, and other leftovers.
Kids will enjoy a hands-on experience with Creative Classes with Elaine as they transform rocks
into adorable ladybugs through mandala dot painting.
Join our local plant shop, Los Angeleaves, to pot your own miniature plant. This hands-on
experience will involve digging up and repotting miniature succulents to take home.
The Desert Horticultural Society of the Coachella Valley will be on-site sharing handouts and
information for local residents about best practices and choices of native and drought-tolerant
plants for landscaping in our unique desert habitat.
Visitors are also welcome to use a variety of toys and games that will be placed on the lawn in the West Gardens. The public is encouraged to dress for warm weather, bring sun protection, and stay hydrated for a fun and safe family outing.
Sunnylands Center & Gardens is located at 37977 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage.
