La Quinta, CA – [May 2, 2024] – Old Town Artisan Studios (OTAS) proudly announces the successful launch of its inaugural art mentorship program, Aspiring Artists, welcoming six talented high school students from Desert Sands Unified School District: Keira Farmer (Palm Desert High School), Emily Hinsley (La Quinta High School), Raevyn Johnson (La Quinta High School), Rubi Maldonado (Shadow Hills High School), Levi Reyes (La Quinta High School), and Makayla Townsend (La Quinta High School).
The Aspiring Artists program aims to enhance visual arts education for young creatives in the Coachella Valley by providing immersive learning experiences beyond the classroom. Through an intensive curriculum that includes workshops, seminars, and field trips, participants are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive in the visual arts scene. From crafting artist statements, mastering self-promotion techniques, and gaining invaluable insights from established visual artists, the program empowers students to embody the role of professional artists and pursue a career in the arts.
The culmination of the program resulted in a group exhibition, “Aspire, Create, and Present”, which took place on Thursday, April 18th. An Aspiring Artists participant, Rubi Maldonado from Shadow Hills High School, sold four artworks during the opening reception, and reflected on her experience: “I learned that art can be more than just an emotional outlet or hobby; it can be a passion I can make a career from. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Aspiring Artists program.”
Support for Aspiring Artists has been instrumental, with Desert Sands Unified School District playing a pivotal role in promoting the initiative to its students and teachers. This collaboration underscores the commitment of educational and community sectors to nurture the Coachella Valley’s creative identity.
Isabela K. Garcia, OTAS Gallery and Events Coordinator, remarked, “As a non-profit organization, OTAS is dedicated to fostering the creative spirit of the Coachella Valley. Initiatives like the Aspiring Artists program uphold our mission of providing positive art experiences to individuals of all backgrounds. By offering this free enrichment program, we ensure that artistic expression remains inclusive and accessible.”
The Aspiring Artists Student Art Exhibition, “Aspire, Create, and Present,” is on display from April 18th through May 11th in the Leland Gallery at Old Town Artisan Studios, 78046 Calle Barcelona, La Quinta, CA 92253.
